Championing ethical investment in Africa
Since 2015, Globethics, in collaboration with the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) and with the support of Bread for the World, has been implementing the African Church Assets Programme (ACAP), helping leaders in churches and church-related organisations (CCROs) to build practical capacity, accountability and transparency in the management of assets and resources.
From 19 to 22 November 2023, the AACC held its 12th General Assembly at the Nigeria Christian Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. The assembly brought together 700 participants from over 200 CCROs. Globethics, in collaboration with AACC, organised and led a side event on 21 November 2023 on the theme of Ethical Investment and Church Assets Management. 70 participants from different Churches and CROs across the globe were present.
The event was an opportunity to engage with participants on the ten-year journey of the African Church Assets Programme (ACAP), following a resolution of the 10th AACC General Assembly held in 2013 in Kampala, Uganda.
The rationale for the programme stems from the fact that churches and church-related organisations in Africa often find it difficult to manage their assets transparently and responsibly and invest them in a sustainable and, above all, ethical way.
Throughout the four phases of the programme, activities have been aimed at strengthening institutional sustainability and capacity and at encouraging ethical thinking and practices. The main purpose of ACAP V, held in 2023, was to apply this learning so that CCROs can be more sustainable. In 2023, a learning review of ACAP participants was conducted and national ethical investment guidelines developed for Kenya and Ethiopia respectively. The ACAP reports, handbook and ethical management guide are available online for all to access.
