Rudolf von Sinner

Of Swiss and Brazilian citizenship, Rudolf von Sinner earned both his Licentiate (1993) and Doctorate in Theology (2001) from the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he was awarded the Amerbach Prize in 2002 for his outstanding dissertation. From 2003 to 2019, he served as a professor of Systematic Theology, Ecumenism, and Interreligious Dialogue at the Lutheran School of Theology (Faculdades EST) in São Leopoldo, Brazil.
During this time, he also acted as Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research (2007-19) and was the founding Director of the Institute of Ethics at Faculdades EST (2014-19). While finishing his role at EST in early 2019, he joined the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR) in Curitiba as Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, where he later became Head of the Graduate Program in Theology.
His academic career is marked by research positions and fellowships, including as a Swiss National Foundation for Research fellow, exploring Brazilian churches' role in democracy (2003-06), and a resident member at Princeton's Center of Theological Inquiry (2006-07). He obtained his Habilitation at the University of Bern in 2010 and has held esteemed research fellowships at universities in Göttingen and Munich.
A member of several theological associations, he moderated the World Council of Churches’ Commission on Ecumenical Education and Formation and served on Brazil’s National Committee for Religious Diversity (2016-19). His research spans public theology, political ethics, bioethics, and the doctrine of the Trinity, among other areas, and he holds an ongoing productivity fellowship from Brazil’s Council for Scientific and Technological Development. He is a member of the Globethics Pool of Experts, a regular contributor to Globethics Publications and a Board Member.
