El Salvador takes major step to integrate ethics in higher education
In a significant development for El Salvador’s higher education landscape, Globethics, in collaboration with the National Directorate of Higher Education (DNES), the Evangelical University (UEES), and Universidad Salvadoreña Alberto Masferrer (USAM), has presented the first milestone of the ambitious project “Integrating Ethics in the National Higher Education System of El Salvador.” The project aims to embed ethics as a core element across all higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country, setting a new standard for ethical leadership in education.
The launch event introduced a comprehensive diagnostic report, developed with insights from both local and international experts, which outlines strategic guidelines for a national plan focused on instilling ethics within higher education. This plan includes recommendations for integrating ethics into curricula, strengthening teacher training, and creating protocols and coexistence manuals to guide institutions in fostering an ethical learning environment.
“The participation of academic authorities from 42 higher education institutions in El Salvador highlights the country’s commitment to embracing and promoting ethics in a strategic, lasting, and cross-cutting manner,” noted Christian Aparicio. “This agreement enhances educational practices by establishing ethical guidelines and protocols across curricula, shaping educational frameworks from teacher training to manuals cultivating a responsible and empathetic university community,” he added.
Maria Eugenia Barroso, Globethics’ Regional Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasised the project’s broader impact, highlighting that the initiative not only strengthens ethical leadership in El Salvador but also serves as a model that can inspire similar projects worldwide.
This collaborative effort, supported by national academic institutions and leaders, marks an essential step toward creating a more ethical, inclusive, and responsible higher education system in El Salvador, with potential to influence educational frameworks internationally.
